About Rummikub

Rummikub, created by Kinkajoo, is a free online version of the classic tile-based game that blends elements of rummy card games with number-based strategy. Instead of cards, players arrange numbered, colored tiles into valid groups and runs, racing to be the first to empty their rack completely. You can play with 2, 3, or 4 players, either against friends and family or against the computer, and the addictive, easy-to-learn-but-hard-to-master nature of the rules is exactly what has kept Rummikub popular for generations.

Rummikub runs entirely in your browser with no download or install needed, controlled with simple mouse clicks and drags to move tiles around the board. Whether you’re playing a quick round solo against the AI or setting up a private match with friends, the digital version keeps the tactile, puzzle-like satisfaction of the original tile game fully intact.

Groups, Runs, and the Initial Meld

Each player starts with 14 tiles, and the goal is to be the first to eliminate every tile from your rack by arranging them into valid groups or runs on the board. A group needs a minimum of 3 tiles sharing the same number across different colors, such as a 5 of blue, a 5 of yellow, and a 5 of red, while a run needs a minimum of 3 consecutive numbers in the same color, like 4, 5, and 6 of blue. Before you can play any tiles at all, you need to make an initial meld worth at least 30 points combined — only after that can you begin manipulating tiles already on the board to unload more of your own rack each turn.

Manipulating the Board

Once your initial meld is down, Rummikub opens up considerably: you’re free to rearrange existing groups and runs on the board, splitting and recombining them as long as every resulting set stays valid, purely to create space for tiles from your own rack. This is where the real strategy lives, since a board that looks locked can often be reorganized into a completely different configuration that suddenly accepts several of your tiles at once. If you can’t make a legal play on your turn, you must draw a tile from the pool and pass.

Tips for Winning at Rummikub

Hold back a couple of flexible tiles even after your initial meld if it helps you stay ready to manipulate the board on a future turn. Watch which numbers and colors your opponents seem to be collecting, since holding onto tiles they clearly need can slow their progress. Use the 777 and 789 auto-arrange shortcuts to quickly test whether a valid group or run is hiding in your rack rather than manually shuffling tiles by hand. Remember that when a round ends, remaining tiles count against you, so if your rack looks unplayable, prioritize getting rid of your highest-value tiles first.

How to Play Rummikub

  1. Get your tiles — Start the round with 14 tiles on your rack.
  2. Plan your sets — Look for potential groups (same number, different colors) and runs (consecutive numbers, same color).
  3. Make your initial meld — Play a combination worth at least 30 points to enter the game.
  4. Manipulate the board — Rearrange existing groups and runs to make room for your own tiles.
  5. Draw when stuck — Take a tile from the pool if you can’t make a legal move.
  6. Auto-arrange if needed — Use 777 or 789 to quickly spot valid combinations.
  7. Empty your rack first — Be the first player to play every tile and win the round.
